Welcome To The Girlhood Issue – Plus My 5 Favourite Books On The Theme

This week at Service95, we are looking at all things girlhood. It’s a special time, and I often find myself drawn to depictions of it – through the books I read, the music I listen to or the stories of people I connect with. That’s why I’m especially proud of this week’s issue, where we explore so many different nuances of the word. We have a beautiful piece by Trans activist Charlie Craggs reflecting on how it feels to embrace girlhood as a Trans woman, an essay by Ione Gamble, the founder of Polyester Zine, on the power of being a ‘gross girl’, a Watch List of 5 films exploring the realities of girlhood, and so much more. To kick us off, here’s a list of my favourite books on the theme. Enjoy the issue!
- The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
- Transitional by Munroe Bergdorf
- Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
- The Last Girl by Nadia Murad
- My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
