Troye Sivan’s 5 Favourite LGBTQIA+ Spots In Melbourne

Troye Sivan has always defied definitions. Since rising to fame on an Australian TV show in 2006, the multi-hyphenate has produced three albums, won a host of awards, founded fragrance and lifestyle brand Tsu Lange Yor with his brother and collaborated with the likes of Charli XCX, Lauv and Ariana Grande... need we say more?
For Troye, the turning point came in 2013. That was the year he signed to Universal Music Australia – memorable enough. But it was also when he uploaded his own coming-out story to his YouTube channel, sharing it with millions.
He reflects on this transformative period during his appearance on our podcast, Dua Lipa: At Your Service. Speaking to Dua, he says, “I wanted to live my life... I was scared that someone was going to out me, and I was about to sign a record deal. I did not want them to be able to tell me to stay in the closet because I was super comfortable with myself. So I just saw it as an opportunity to give back to the community that helped me.”
Now 29, Sivan hasn’t stopped. In an Instagram announcement for his last UK and European tour, for his album Something To Give Each Other in 2024, he said, “I want this to be the pop show. It has to be the party. It has to be the best time of your lives, the best night of my life, and now it’s finally coming.” Those who attended can attest that it was quite the party.
During their interview, Dua and Troye also reminisce about touring in North America in 2016: “It’s one of my fondest memories ever, and it’s also one of the proudest tours that I’ve ever been a part of,” she says. “I’m not just saying this because I’m talking to you, but really, it completely changed my life.””
Here, Sivan shares five LGBTQIA+-friendly spots he recommends to visit in his home city of Melbourne.
- Hares & Hyenas – “A queer bookstore in Melbourne with a beautiful new home in the Victorian Pride Centre.”
- Victorian Pride Centre – “Speaking of! This is the first purpose-built centre for Victoria’s LGBTIQIA+ communities in a beautiful building in St Kilda. ∏
- Sircuit – “I’ve had many, many a drunken, sweaty night here – a classic queer club in Fitzroy.”
- The Peel – “A great dive bar; go there after Sircuit.”
- Any wine bar – “One of my favourite things about Melbourne is how queer and safe the whole city feels. Go eat and drink at any one of our wine bars or restaurants.”
